Chestnut has a lustrous grain and is reasonably firm. It is highly moisture-resistant. After a few years of use, chestnut pens that were light grey will change to a slightly darker brown.

Chesunut seeds have been found at archeological sites in Japan dating back thousands of years and is a common ingredient in Japanese foods. Its wood is used in everything from construction materials to furniture, making it a very familiar tree in Japan. Due to its resistance to decay, it is considered a symbol of hard work and perseverance in Japan.
