It is a representative tree species unique to Japan, and grows from northern Honshu to Yakushima in the south. Artificial plantings extend to southern Hokkaido, and are number one in terms of quantity. Particularly famous are Akita cedar, Tenryu cedar, Yoshino cedar, Hita cedar, Obi cedar, and Yaku cedar. The border of the sapwood is clear, the sapwood is white, and the heartwood is pale pink to reddish brown, sometimes tinged with blackish brown. The wood grain is clear and straight.
The material is somewhat light and soft, has relatively few irregularities, and is easy to process such as cutting. Slightly inferior in water resistance. Easy to split vertically along the wood grain.
